Getting to Know Dionna

The National Scleroderma Foundation is excited to introduce Dionna Bartos as our new Director of Education. Dionna first joined the Foundation in 2015 as a volunteer and, in May 2024, stepped into the role of Executive Director for the Lower Great Lakes Chapter.

She brings a strong background in education, human resources, and nonprofit leadership – experience that has always centered on supporting people and building strong communities. Before joining the Foundation, Dionna worked with Warren County Public Schools, serving as a Human Resources Specialist and later as a Business Education Teacher at South Warren High School.

In the Q&A that follows, get to know Dionna and hear more about her vision, passions, and plans for the future of scleroderma research.

1. What initially brought you to the National Scleroderma Foundation?

My connection to the National Scleroderma Foundation started off as a volunteer with a close personal journey. I fully believe in our mission and vision. My mom lost her battle to scleroderma in 2001 when she was just 40 years old and I was 7 years old. That experience stayed with me and really shaped my heart for this work. What started as a personal connection has grown into a true passion, making sure patients and families feel seen, supported, and never alone in this journey.

2. You are the new Director of Education; can you tell us a little about that role and how you’ll be working with our community?

In my role as Director of Education, my focus is making sure our community has access to education that is clear, helpful, and informative. I’ll be working closely with patients, caregivers, healthcare partners/doctors, and our amazing volunteers to grow educational programs, strengthen resources, and create opportunities to learn and connect – both virtually and in person. I’m also really passionate about helping our community feel more confident and involved in advocacy efforts that move awareness, research, and patient support forward. I hope to see you at our National Scleroderma Foundation Conference!

3. What are your passions and activities outside of the office?

Outside of work, I love staying active, and spending time with my husband, family, friends, and our fur babies. I’ve also found a passion for coaching and just started my fifth year as Head Coach of the South Warren Girls Lacrosse Team.

4. At the National Scleroderma Foundation, when a person joins the team, we ask for one thing that we will not learn about them from their LinkedIn profile.

I love staying involved with our local humane society in any way that I can. We have 3 dogs and 2 cats, but I have been told we have hit our limit on rescuing animals for now!

5. Last, but not least, what is your biggest goal for the year?

My biggest goal this year is to expand the reach of our education and advocacy, so more patients and families feel informed, empowered, and connected. If more people can say, “I am starting to understand/learn more and I don’t feel so alone,” then I know we’re doing the right work.
