Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a treasured tradition in the Latino community that celebrates the lives of loved ones who have passed. This year, at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve’s annual Día de los Muertos event, family, friends, and supporters gathered to honor the memory of Evelyn “Lynn” Orta, a true Scleroderma Warrior.
Lynn bravely battled scleroderma for 12 years, becoming a passionate advocate for the scleroderma community. Known for her unwavering positivity and vibrant spirit, Lynn was a beloved twin, daughter, sister, and best friend. Tragically, she passed away on December 1, 2023, at just 21 years old, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew her.
To honor Lynn’s legacy, her loved ones came together with the National Scleroderma Foundation and the University of Nevada Las Vegas Latino Pre-Medical Student Association to create a stunning ofrenda (altar) at this year’s Día de los Muertos celebration. Titled Lynn’s Legacy, the altar told Lynn’s story and raised awareness about scleroderma, reaching both English and Spanish-speaking communities. The display featured cherished photos, educational materials, and a unique interactive element that allowed visitors to write notes of positivity, continuing Lynn’s mission of spreading joy and hope.
Throughout the weekend, hundreds of visitors learned about scleroderma and Lynn’s remarkable journey. By the event’s conclusion, Lynn’s Legacy altar earned third place in the altar contest, a powerful acknowledgment of the love and admiration surrounding her memory.
This tribute to Lynn not only celebrated her life but also amplified her advocacy work, inspiring others to join the fight against scleroderma. Her story is a testament to the strength of community and the enduring impact of a life dedicated to making a difference.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this heartfelt celebration of Lynn’s life and legacy, especially to Lynn’s family and friends.
