The National Scleroderma Foundation has received official recognition from the Senate of Puerto Rico for its commitment to improving the lives of people affected by scleroderma on the island. The honor highlights the Florida and Puerto Rico Chapter’s work to connect the community with resources and support.
The Senate approved Motion 2336, a motion of congratulations, on October 22, 2026. Senator Juan Oscar Morales Rodríguez presented it to Lourdes Pérez, chapter volunteer and support group facilitator, during an Alianza por los Pacientes event at the Puerto Rico Senate on October 30, 2026. Pérez accepted on the Foundation’s behalf.
According to Lorraine Biaggi, regional director for the Southeast Region, the honor reflects two and a half years of grassroots work to build the Foundation’s presence in Puerto Rico. That work began with listening to the community and building relationships. Volunteers have helped guide its growth by sharing their experiences and contributing ideas, creating more opportunities for education and connection.
The motion also acknowledged the Foundation’s participation in Alianza por los Pacientes, a network of patient organizations working together on shared healthcare challenges. This participation helps raise awareness of scleroderma and brings greater visibility to the needs of the community in Puerto Rico.
“This recognition by the Puerto Rico Senate belongs to our community,” Biaggi said. “It honors not only the Foundation’s achievements but also the people who have built it, often through countless hours behind the scenes.”
