A Hands-On Look at Scleroderma Research in New England

The New England Chapter recently hosted a special Patient Education Event at Dr. Jonathan Garlick’s lab at Tufts University, giving patients and families the rare opportunity to step directly into the world of research.

Rather than simply hearing about studies, attendees were able to engage with the science in a hands-on way. Attendees had the opportunity to see and even handle skin samples while learning about the step-by-step process scientists use to study scleroderma.

Guided by Dr. Jonathan Garlick and Dr. Michael Whitfield of Dartmouth College, participants gained an accessible, meaningful look at cutting-edge research. The experience not only deepened understanding of how discoveries are made but also highlighted the connection between research and the lived experiences of people with scleroderma.

Events like this strengthen the bridge between the scientific community and the scleroderma community, showing the power of collaboration and shared learning.
